Deepmind, a Google AI company, introduced a robot which is fit for playing table tennis. The company arranged a match between an AI robot and 29 professional table tennis players. 45% of the matches are won by AI having a complete success with beginner players despite half matches failed with intermediate players and gained zero with professional players. The rules were set up in normal mode with slight modifications. Robots are not very efficient in dealing with underspin and are troubled to crack the fast balls.
This invention will help in the expansion of AI in sports and games which will help in handling more complicated tasks as for practicing. Much more updating is required to deal with more advanced players. Players opined robot matches were enjoyable and fun oriented.
This AI is considered as the first robot with its own intelligence in competing with human players. Low level skill policies and high level controllers are the two parts of the robot. The first one dealt with the hitting of the balls while the other had the capacity to make decisions on skill suited for the moment. The researchers made a collection of data related to position, speed and spin in tennis which is helpful in decision making. The matches with humans help to accumulate new data based on the position of balls. It made AI more capable to fine tune its caliber.
